Welcome to the show.
Hello everyone I'm Kristen Cho and I'm Cameron word.
Okay we're so happy to have you with us.
We're on page 25.
It's a food die long day. (???)
My favorite topic food okay so this month we're having a family dinner.
Oh yeah.
So we're gonna so the whole like we're gonna have like four or five dialogues about this family dinner and it was a continuation the story continues.
It's a long long dinner.
All right, so, of course, uh a family dinner is I would say I had a Jewish friend or my best friend's jewish and
she would always have their um family dinners every week.
They would get together and other I think other families too.
have their you know weekly family dinners.
How about you? When you were and When we talk about family dinners we're talking like not just your mom and dad but maybe your uncle or you know cousins that sort of thing.
Yeah, your extended family.
yes.
yes. uh, my family did not have family dinners often maybe once a year.
uh but that was because we everyone lived very far apart.
Right.
So it was just like Christmas or thanksgiving
Yeah, I think so.
Maybe the fourth of July.
Yeah, I agree. so, I think definitely holidays is a time when people get together and in Korea too.
So we're gonna look at a family and how they have this dinner and eating and cleaning and cooking all of it.
Okay here are some expressions that we're gonna cover.
Uh, get together with someone.
In this case, it just means together, together.
You're meeting them usually several people in one place, one house, one location.
On the ball.
On the ball means that you are putting your attention there so that you can act quickly.
like if there's a problem you can solve it really quick.
Okay, and finally get on someone's case c-a-s-e.
Yes, this means to nag someone to criticize them for everything and not stopping.
Oh so just keep bothering somebody.
Why are you doing this?
When are you gonna get married?
Yeah, when are you gonna, when are you gonna have a kid.
okay all right let's go ahead and check out this family dinner.
Where is your sister with the dessert? She's making me nervous.
Don't worry Shannon will be here. She loves getting together with a family more than any of us.
I wish she was more on the ball like you. what she needs is a husband.
Now, mom, let's not get on her case tonight about her marital status.
She's a very independent woman.
Can I help it that I worry about her?
Oh, I just heard the front door. I bet that Shannon with her famous lemon meringue pies.
Okay, so when you have a family dinner with extended family.
It's you know time for gossip it's time to you know talk about people.
Let's see what happens.
Mom says, where is your sister with a dessert she's making me nervous.
Oh, this sounds like my mom.
I'm telling you this is a very typical conversation.
Now, where is your sister with the dessert? So the sister was supposed to bring the dessert.
Yes.
She's still not here.
Not here.
Mom's getting worried.
Come on hurry hurry hurry.
Come on where is she?
Then Tony says, don't worry Shannon will be here. She loves getting together with the family more than any of us.
Okay, so Tony says okay come on don't worry. you know, she's coming.
It'll be okay.
Yeah
She'll be, she loves getting together with the family more than anyone so she likes it the most
yes
So, if you get together with what does this mean.
That means that you're gathering. so here, it's to get together with the family.
It means that the entire family is coming to the same house to socialize to meet often after not seeing each other for a long time.
So you can get together with your colleagues, your co-workers. um, you can get together with,
old classmates.
old classmates.
yeah.
it's definitely a social thing.
Yes, it's something I would say it's at
least three or four people getting together. usually not two.
okay, all right, mom says I wish she was more on the ball like you what she needs is a husband.
it's a very typical mother top.
It sounds like my mother. yeah.
Okay, I wish she was more on the ball like you.
yes.
So the mom is comparing Tony her other daughter and then Shannon the one who's not here.
Right.
So she wants her to be more on the ball.
Right. So on the ball means like paying attention or you know able to act very quickly but specifically here the mother wishes that Shannon had things planned better. you know, there are people that are always late.
yeah.
right. Because often oh I forgot something or oh they didn't plan or prepare correctly.
Right.
So if you're on the ball you are prepared so that you're always on time.
Okay, so you're just kind of like, oh, ready prepared and you're gonna just be like right you know do things
very quickly.
yeah, if there's a problem you, you are prepared enough to solve it very quickly
and so mom says what she needs is a husband so now it's back so Shannon is not married so all moms
say the same thing. when are you gonna get married? or when you get married? when are you gonna have
a kid?
Okay, Tony says, now mom, okay, so the Tony is very important.
Yeah.
Now, mom, let's not get on her case tonight about her marital status.
So when she says now mom so what is what intonation is this.
She's a little aggravated.
yes.
It's not super aggravated.
Not angry.
Yeah, not angry.
Just irritating.
Yeah.
now mom it's kind of like your tone is a, a warning like a little bit of a light warning.
yeah
let's not get on her case tonight.
to get on someone's case means to nag.
why aren't you doing this?
잔소리?
Yeah, it's a lot of 잔소리.
Why haven't you done this? You should do this. You have to do it, you're getting older.
yeah.
If you don't hurry, you're never going to find a husband.
Okay, oh that's a lot of 잔소리 Cameron.
Yeah.
That sounds good.
Okay, so, to get on anyone's case means their situation.
Yes.
Whatever it is you're not happy and you keep attacking them.
Okay so about what her marital status.
That's our power vocabulary.
Marital status is whether you're married or not married whether you're divorced whether you're widowed it's whatever that status is.
Okay, so in this case, she's single she's not married.
yes.
Um she's a very independent woman and mom says, can I help it that I worry about her?
oh, this is, this is such. Isn't this dialogue amazing? This is like a typical American family.
I'm getting so much trauma.
I'm sorry. okay, can I help it that I, this is our power pattern?
can I help it that I worry about her?
can I help it that I'm upset?
um, so here can I help it that means like, am I wrong? that is it bad?
that so when the mom says can I help it that I worry about her?
the mom's saying I'm the mom, I'm supposed to worry.
Yeah, she's like, I'm doing my job.
That's right.
and so, we have this expression i can't help it. So basically i can't help it means it's out of my control.
it's my nature so when you say can I help it it means i can't help it.
yeah.
it's natural.
what do you expect?
yeah, i'm her mother
that's right
so Tony says,
oh i just heard the front door i bet that's shannon with her famous lemon meringue pies.
okay let's go ahead and listen to that dialogue one more time.
where is your sister with the dessert. she's making me nervous.
don't worry shannon will be here she loves getting together with a family more than any of us.
i wish she was more on the ball like you what she needs is a husband.
now mom let's not get on her case tonight about her marital status.
she's a very independent woman.
can I help it that i worry about her.
oh i just heard the front door i bet that's shannon with her famous lemon meringue pies.
all right it's time for power note we're on pages 28 and 29 of our pe textbook.
all right to get together with someone is to gather to meet.
yes.
okay. so would you and your or would you like to do this one?
sure. would you and your husband like to get together with me and joanne on Friday?
that sounds great. we'll be at your house at seven.
yeah, it sounds like a double date.
okay, my friends and i get together every saturday night to play board games.
yeah so it's a group of people coming together to usually do something,
yeah.
it can be to eat or a lot of clubs, will get together like like school clubs to maybe play basketball or you know hike.
yeah, so, i have a so this is a really a good example. we know that moms,
yes
like to get together. especially like from school.
yeah like mom's social clubs.
yeah, exactly so like the same class. they're on the same class and the moms from that class. they'd like to get
together and share notes and talk about you know their kids and stuff like that.
right.
kristen doesn't like to get together.
you don't. is there a reason you don't like to get together?
i do well i do if i have to but i'm not like because i'm working you know so it's really i'm just too busy.
so you can get it moms can get together, friends can get together, co-workers can get together.
yeah.
couples can get together.
yes, anything they're they the actual meeting it can be for anything but this phrase is used for any group of
people that are meeting at the same place.
and it's first usually social things.
yeah, usually i it looks my image of it is there's a lot of talking.
yeah, exactly so if you're at the company and there's going to be maybe a company dinner or maybe just a casual
dinner among co-workers you can say hey you know so and so you know the uh the department our department
we're go we're going to get together and have dinner you want to join us.
yeah, that's a great example.
okay all right.
now on the ball means you're quick to take action you're attentive you're ready ready to go.
yes.
okay the team is really on the ball today what did you do coach.
i told them that if they won the game we would go get pizza afterwards.
okay so if a sports team is on the ball.
yes.
what does this mean.
it means that they're doing well in the game so they're very focused on getting the most points they can so that they will win.
okay.
how about the next sentence my assistant is always on the ball and never lets me miss an appointment so if an assistant is on the ball means that they're doing a really good job.
yeah, they've got your schedule mapped out they've got everything prepared if a problem arises they already know what they're going to do as a solution you know you really don't have to worry about them.
so when we describe someone as being on the ball it's a compliment.
yes
definitely.
it's always a compliment.
always a compliment because they do the work well but they're quick yes
and i think that's something that we
should know
yeah quick and they're good right if you
think about
i do not think that this is where the
phrase comes from
but if you're standing on a ball trying
to balance
you have to pay attention and if the
ball starts moving a certain way
you have to react with your body so that
you stay on top
that's right so in the same way you're
in your situation you're focused and you
know
if a phone call comes and there's a
disaster you can answer it and
solve that problem yeah yeah i love
working with people who are on the ball
it really makes such a difference that's
why i love working with you
well cameron likewise you know you
always have everything set up ready for
the book
well i tell you about because if they're
not on the ball especially when you're
working with someone who is
not on the ball it is so top top hey
yeah
it really really is it's like oh
but if someone is on the ball it's like
okay done yes an opposite phrase would
be
to drop the ball oh this means that
the situation is no longer in control
maybe you forgot something
or you didn't do something correctly you
didn't do your responsibility well so
you dropped
the ball okay so a lot of ball analogies
here yes okay
if you get on someone's case it means to
criticize
or to nag someone okay the chief
financial director had a hard time on
the earnings call today
yeah it was terrible how the reporters
got on his case during the q a session
so the reporters can get on someone's
case
yes hey why a public figure why why did
you make this comment
did you know that the public thinks that
you are lying
uh what are you you're laundering money
where did all the money go
like just asking lots of questions yeah
kind of
as an attack it's a bit of an attack
actually yeah
uh could you get on becky's case about
her grades
she won't listen to me hey becky what is
this be in math
why haven't you been studying you're
playing too many video games
hey you know we're gonna have to ground
you and
you know you're not gonna be able to
hang with your friends till you get your
math grade up that's right
that would be getting on someone's case
that's right and so of course my son is
always telling me mom get off my case
ah that's a great way so you can get on
someone's case
and whenever you say like well
something like that don't get on my case
yeah
get off my case
don't bother with me okay this is very
commonly used
in families it is very uh-huh that's
right and so
of course this is not something yeah
because you're close to that person and
so you're you're kind of in the position
to kind of attack and say the right
things
or to criticize yeah does your mother
get on your case sometimes yes she does
all the time all the time all the time
always on my case
yeah okay all right our power pattern
today
is can i help at that
can i help it so i can't help it
i can't control it i can't what do you
want me to do god this is how it is
okay can i help it that i'm so hap oh
you wanted to i'll do it i'll do it
can i help it that i'm so handsome what
does this mean
this means i am good looking
and i could not change that if i wanted
to i'm sorry
that you're jealous yeah this is kind of
used as a joke yeah it's a joke it's a
joke
can i help it that you weren't being
careful um
yeah so it's your problem why are you
blaming me
for your problem yeah okay can i help
with that i mean
i can't help it i can't help it okay all
right marital status basically
is the condition of either being married
or not married yeah
single married divorced yeah widow
that's your marital status all right
thank you and uh let's thank our sponsor
hanguk number one
