Welcome to the show.

Hello everyone.

I'm Kristen Jo.

And I'm Cameron Word.

Okay. So, we are going to talk about insomnia this month.

Which is such a popular topic. Popular, makes it seem like people want.

Well, okay not popular.

It is popular but. it's, it's, everyone's talking.
Very common. it's a common topic I should say.

Yeah. Um, I can't sleep. What should I do?
So, all month, uh, what we do every day is like on this day, every week, yes, we are
going to talk about the same thing, But different dialogues.

Right, right. So all month we're going to talk about not being able to sleep.

How do we, you know, better sleep?
How do we deal with our insomnia?

How's your sleep, Cameron?

It's not great.

No? Not great.

I'll tell you why, Why. So, you know, I do like stocks and investments.

Yes.

The American stock market, ah, opens at 11 30   p.m.

Oh. So I gotta stay up to then. I check my
prices. Yes. If it's down, I'm like, oh no, oh no, can't sleep. That's one of the worst things
you can do. Ah, yeah. Before you sleep. Literally the worst. Because if it doesn't work out, well, if it
falls, well, that's gonna ruin your whole night's sleep. Or it's up, it's up, and I'm excited that
I'm gonna become a millionaire and then I can't go to sleep. Yes. It's just not a good thing. What
about you? How's your sleep? I'm a good sleeper.   Lucky you. I mean I have always been a good
sleeper. Because you eat lots of Kimchi. I   eat a lot of Kimchi. It's not what they say, like,
every problem in Koreans eats your Kimchi. And it'll solve the problem. Oh, so true. And the world is
catching on. The world now knows. Ah, Kimchi, the importance of probiotics. You just sleep really
well. Naturally, I've been a good sleeper. So that's why, like, even when, you know, these kids
stay up all night and they study in through the night. I can't. I have to sleep. Mm-hmm. Hurricane
can happen a cycle, you know, a tornado, uh-huh,   I'm sleeping. You're sleeping. I'm sleeping. Yeah,
okay. All right. We've got some great expressions today. Yes. Put a stop to something. Yes. So
you can say. you know, like, stop it. But if you put a stop to something, Right, so, this is like
you said, to stop something, to end something,   but it feels like you're using some power. Oh. Or
like you're, Putting your stuff, really ending it now. Oh, wow. There's some, there's some weight
to it. Oh, sounds kind of scary. Okay. Not scary but forceful. Forceful. Good. Oh, it's out of my
hands. It's out of my control. I can't do anything about it. Sorry. God. Okay, fuel, f-u-e-l.
Yes. As a verb. The fire. To fuel the fire.   It's like you're taking gasoline.
Yeah. And you're throwing it on fire. Oh.  So you're making a problem worse. All right. Nice
visual. Let's go ahead and listen to our dialogue.   Aydah, you don't look so good. Have you been
sleeping well lately? Is it that obvious? I   haven't gotten a full night's sleep in a month.
I need to put a stop to this problem. Have you   seen a doctor or tried an over-the-counter
sleep aid? Yes, but I feel terrible in the morning. I'm like a zombie all day. A good
night of sleep is not out of your hands.   You should see a sleep specialist. I will. I think
the stress I'm feeling is fueling the fire, too. Let's take a look. Tristan says Aydah, you don't
look so good. Have you been sleeping well lately?   Now obviously, this is like someone who's very
close. Yes. You don't want to say this, like. Oh,   you don't look so good to someone that you're not
very close to. Yeah, you don't. It could be rude.   It could be, it, it is, it is. Unless they're
actually very sick. Yeah, like let's say their face is purple or green because they're sick.
Yeah, one time I made a big mistake. One time   I said. Oh, you look a little tired. I don't
know why. And she, you know, when she said. She said the complete opposite. It just happened the
other day. She said. Oh, I feel better than ever. Yeah. Oh, you don't want to say. You look
tired. Or, you don't look so good. You don't because if they're not. Yeah, then it's just,
like oh, just don't say, it's just like saying,   oh, your face is droopy. Yeah. Your skin is, so,
Trista says, have you been sleeping well? And Aydah what does she say? Is it that obvious? I haven't
gotten a full night's sleep in a month. I need to put a stop to this problem. Okay, I like this
expression. Is it that obvious? This is actually a very good pattern, actually. Mm-hmm. Isn't it
obvious? Can you, is it so? Easy to tell. You can,   yeah, it's, you can see it on my face? Yeah. Is
it that easy to see? I thought I was hiding it.   Okay, now, she hasn't gotten a full night's sleep.
So, a full night's sleep. Meaning, she hasn't gotten her seven to eight hours. Right. She got
maybe three hours or four hours. Okay, in a month.   That's a long time. That's a
long time. So, what does she say?   She says I need to put a stop to this
problem. Yes. So, here she put a stop to the problem, meaning, she didn't
just she isn't going to just stop it.   She's going to have to use force or like do
something big. Yeah. To make this problem go away. Right, like instead of just saying. The
difference is, oh, I have to stop this problem. Or   I have to put a stop to this problem. Right,
There's a different energy there. Right, right. So there's it's usually for problems that are very serious or yeah if you haven't slept a month.
Well, if she's using these sleep aids.

Sometimes what happens is, you can go to sleep but the next day you can't get up yeah you're just still kind of sleepy and groggy, groggy.

Tristan says a good night of sleep is not out of your hands.

Uh, you should see a sleep specialist.

Yes.
Okay, a good night of sleep is our power pattern.

so a good night of sleep is basically getting a quality amount of time of sleep.

Yeah, so, oh, you know, were you able to get some rest last night?
Yeah, I got a good night of sleep.

Mm-hmm.

Which would be a great answer.

Right. And this is talking about both the time and the quality.

Uh-huh. So, you had maybe seven or eight hours of good sleep.

Good like high quality.

Yes, yes, yes.

Now Tristan says so, a good night of sleep is not out of your hands.
It's kind of like a double negative.

Because really out of your hands means as you said, out of your control.

Right. So, it's not out of your control. That means you can do something. You can. You can solve
this. And this is kind of a special case where you're saying not out of your hands. Usually, you
would use the out of your hands form which means that it's out of your control.

Okay, so, you can fix it.

You can do something with a sleep specialist.

And what does Ada say?

I will I think the stress I'm feeling is fueling the fire, too.

So, maybe if we were to kind of review address the cause here is basically the stress.

Right, so, she's already not sleeping.

But because she is stressed.

She can't sleep even more.

That's right.

The problem gets worse.

So when you have a problem and something makes that problem worse.

You call it.

Fueling the fire. Fire. You generally you don't want to fire.

No. But if you throw gasoline on top of that fire. It's going to get much bigger.
That's right. Okay.

Let's go ahead and listen to that dialogue one more time.

Ada, you don't look so good. Have you been sleeping well lately?

Is it that obvious? I haven't gotten a full night's sleep in a month.

I need to put a stop to this problem.

Have you seen a doctor or tried an over-the-counter sleep aid?

Yes, but I feel terrible in the morning.

I'm like a zombie all day.

A good night of sleep is not out of your hands.

You should see a sleep specialist.

I will I think the stress I'm feeling is fueling the fire, too.

It's time for Power Note.

Please join us on pages 16 and 17 of our pe textbook.

Now if you put a stop to something.

It means to end it.

Yes.

To stop it. But the difference between using the word just to stop.

And to put a stop.

There's much more force and power.

Yeah.

You're doing something big.

Okay.

Stop it. All right.

We have to put a stop to the graffiti on the subway cars.

The police are trying their best but it's not easy.

That was my very my deep announcement.

Oh, that was my, you know, male voice.

Uh. please put a stop to your arguing before grandma and grandpa get here.

Yeah.

So this isn't just stop. It's stop now. Or I'm going to hurt you.

There will be a punishment.

That's right.

So like you said it's usually used with an important issue an urgent issue.

So, uh, maybe for example you want remember like last month we talked about making the business green.

Yes. Okay.

And one thing when it comes to our environment, we need to put a stop to like plastic use first.

Yeah, see, that's kind of serious.

Yes.

It's not just like, oh, stop using plastic.

No, we need to put a stop too. Right.

So, these are usually bad actions often bad habits that we have. Like what?

Uh, put a stop to drunk
driving. Ooh. That's maybe more of a social issue.   Sure. But really maybe the government coming up
with strict laws. Uh, having more uh police checks   for where people might be drunk driving things
like that. That's right. I remember a time when   it really the, the American government really,
uh, actually, uh, led a big campaign like don't   drink and drive that was a slogan. Before
that you know there were accidents but the the government really tried to put a stop to
it. Right. Yeah, so, if you get a dui which is driving   under the influence. Yes. Meaning you're, you drank.
Yes. You can lose your license. That's right. Yeah,   so put a stop is any of these big
issues. Got it. Getting them over with.   Stop it. Okay. Uh, if something is out of my hands. It
means that it's, I can't control it. Can't control   it. Okay. Let it be. Let it be. Okay. Let's see this
example. I've decided to take the project out of   your hands. You're too distracted. I'm sorry my
wife is really sick and I can't concentrate.   so here we have a situation where another person
is taking it out of their control. It's kind   of like you're taking away the responsibility.
Yeah. Uh, and this bee was doing some kind of job and he just he can't do it right now. His personal
situation is not possible. He has a lot of personal problems. So the boss is like okay. I'm gonna take
that away from you. Yeah. It's out of your hands.   It's out of your hands. Yeah. Okay. Once I submitted
my application it was out of my hands. Yeah. You can't control it. No. If you apply for college
apply for a job you send your application. And then.   That's it. Whatever happens, happens. That's right.
And so you get the idea that it's like uh not only is it out of your control but it's also there's
nothing you can do about it. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It's just you'll have to wait and see. Yeah. It's out of your
hands. All right. So I did the best that I could.   And now it's out of my hands. Yeah. So say for
example like you're helping a friend. Yes. And she has a problem a serious problem. Maybe she's got
a drinking problem. I don't know whatever problem.   And uh or a problem with her boyfriend. Yes.
Uh and, you know, you do everything that you,   you know, can do to help her but finally, you say
it's out of my hands. So, I can't help you anymore.   I can't help you anymore. Yeah. I did everything
that I could. It's that feeling. Yeah. Okay. All   right. the last expression is fuel the fire. Meaning
there's a bad situation and you're making it worse.   Why is Terry so angry? I guess your
disagreement didn't get resolved.   I think I fueled the fire when I told him
he didn't know what he was talking about.   Yeah. That doesn't make people happy. You
don't know what you're talking about. Yeah, that makes the, the fighting worse. Yeah. So
you have an argument you have a disagreement   and then if you say something more negative. It
is adding or you know, fueling the fire. Yes. Yeah,   yeah. All right. Bill's excessive drinking
fueled the fire of his liver problems.   Yeah. You can always have liver problems. But
drinking alcohol does not help. Your liver in the lease. Yeah. So say for example genetically
like you are prone to have a bad liver. Yes.   So maybe in your family everyone you know they
have liver issues. Well it's not good already.   And if you're drinking. You're fueling the fire. Yes.
You're making it worse. Yeah. Right, right. So you've got diabetes. And you continue to eat cakes. Sugar.
Okay. Dessert, ice cream, you gotta, cookies, yeah   all the good things. All the good things. That's
fueling the fire. Killing the fire. And so in that case you need to put a stop to it. Yes. Yeah. It's
serious. Stop it. Okay. Our power pattern today is   a good night of sleep. Which means that you got
the right amount of sleep as well as the quality,   right, of sleep. Now you're well-rested. Okay. A good
night of sleep is necessary for a healthy life. Yes.   A good night of sleep will make your eyes less
puffy. So true. Yeah, yeah, get like puffy baggy eyes   get the dark circles. That's right. So it's
important for us to all get a good night of sleep. So Cameron needs to stop looking at the stock
market at midnight. Yes. It's very true. All   right. We wish everybody a good night of sleep.
That's right. Now our power vocab is over the   counter. Yes. And you've probably have heard this
expression before like when you go to the pharmacy some are over the counter and some are
not.  Right. You need a prescription as we would   say. Right. From the doctor. So over-the-counter
just simply means? Medicine that you do not need   a doctor's permission. Yes. Over the counter.
That you can just buy from the shelves.

All right. Uh there's a nice explanation on page
18. Do check it out.
